Providing the knowledge on impact assessment, vulnerability and risks using different methods where community mapping, data analysis tools as well as of data assessment are very much included. Also, students will learn principles of tropical climatology and meteorology, climate model predictions for East Africa and linkages between model predictions on precipitation and flooding/extreme events.

Students learn to understand the concepts of hydraulics and differences between flood mapping approaches. These include simple 2D static GIS flood hazard zoning, 2D hydrodynamic flow models, and 1D-2D hydro-dynamic flow models. They will be able to analyze and hydrologically manipulate Digital Terrain Models, and schematize 2D and 1D-2D flow models using treated terrain data and simple GIS vector datasets of streams.
