The course is structured around five thematic modules that examine the evolution of warfare in the borderlands of Baltic Region and Eastern European empires. The thematic focus of the course lies in the relationship between the border warfare and the state-building processes of the Baltic Region from the early modern period to the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. Each module explores how changes in military organisation, operational practices, and strategic priorities in imperial border regions shaped the capacity of states to govern, mobilise resources, influence state formation and integrate peripheral territories.
