The course provides both practical knowledge and theoretical understanding on questions concerning mining, society and environment relations. The course studies various challenges of sustainability related to extractive sector and use of minerals and metals. These are for example geopolitics of minerals; climate crisis and need of critical metals; circular economy of metals and urban mining; environmental legacies of mining; local mining governance and community development; social impacts of mining and social licence to operate; local mining conflicts and environmental justice; corporate social responsibility in mining.

The scope of the open MOOC course is 3 ECTS. The perspective of the course is social scientific, but everyone is welcome, regardless of their previous educational background. The course does not require any previous knowledge.
