The course provides an overview of the basic principles and justifications of European data protection law, with a particular focus on the General Data Protection Regulation (the GDPR). By the end of the course, students will be able to describe the history and human rights framework behind the EU data protection law, and the principal terms and concepts of the law. By looking at the different principles and obligations of the GDPR, students will also begin to analyse the key content of the Regulation and its interpretation by the European Court of Justice and data protection authorities.

This course is a Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and therefore open to the public in general. Target members of the public are those with an interest in data protection law.
