Antibody Therapeutics

  • 3 ECTS, University of Turku, Responsible teachers: Jukka Alinikula & Urpo Lamminmäki

Learning outcomes:

  • The course focuses on the possibilities of antibodies as therapeutic agents providing the student with knowledge on the origin and structure of antibodies, on their molecular and pharmacological properties as well as on the key biotechnological methods used to develop and produce of them.

After the course the students:

  • Can explain the origin of the diversity in antibody molecules and describe the ways it is manifested in the structure of antibodies.
  • Can demonstrate the basic structure of antibody and the biological roles of the different parts of it.
  • Recognize the key biochemical and pharmacological properties of antibodies
  • Can identify the biological effector mechanisms of antibodies and discuss the interplay between antibodies and other components of the immune system.
  • Can Illustrate the principles of key biotechnologies methods used to generate and engineer antibodies.
  • Can describe the possibilities and limitation of antibody and other binders protein based molecules in therapeutics applications.

During the course the student will develop the following general skills:

  • Critical reading and analysis of scientific literature
  • Self-management skills
  • Written and oral presentation skills

Contents:

  • Overview to Antibodies
  • Mechanisms of antibody action
  • Generating and engineering antibodies
  • Antibodies as drugs
  • Examples of therapeutic antibodies
