What is migration? What functions do migration law play, and how does it work? What are the differences between 'forced' and 'voluntary' migration? This course will cover foundational knowledge to answer the questions posed. It will provide students with broad understandings of state obligations, international laws and human rights in the context of migration. On top of introductory knowledge, students will have the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge about the latest topical issues on migration and migration laws covered by guest experts. Learning will predominantly be done via video lectures, assigned readings, online peer discussions and written assignments .
The aim of the course is to introduce the main principles of migration law: international, EU and Finnish migration law including the regional systems such as the EU. At the end of the course the participants will:
- Gain understanding and ability to explain different legal conceptualisations of migrants, voluntary and forced migration;
- Gain knowledge of the main principles guiding migration law;
- Deepen knowledge on national, regional and international legislations regulating both voluntary and forced migration;
- Be able to apply principles of migration laws to analyse contemporary issues related to migration
