General objective: The learner will be introduced to:

  • advanced principles of quality assurance, certification and testing in the textile and clothing industry, with a focus on sustainability-driven standards, 
  • selecting and applying appropriate certification and testing schemes for optimizing product quality and regulatory compliance to support sustainable development
  • conformity assessment, laboratory testing and digital tools application with the aim of assessing the sustainability of textile processes

Learning Outcomes


Knowledge

After the completion of this module, learners will:
•    Describe the structure and function of quality infrastructure in the EU, including standardization, accreditation, metrology, and conformity assessment.
•    Explain the relationship between standards, regulations, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within sustainability-oriented textile production systems.
•    Recognize major textile product and process certification schemes (GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, EU Ecolabel, Cradle to Cradle) and environmental management systems (ISO 14001, EMAS).
•    Explain the role of laboratories and certification bodies in quality testing, accreditation, and sustainability assessment of textile materials and processes.
•    Describe the principles of environmental impact of testing, data analysis, and digital innovations (blockchain, Digital Product Passport) in textile quality certification.

Skills

After the completion of this module, learners will be able to:
•    Apply relevant quality and environmental standards to evaluate textile products and processes in accordance with sustainability criteria.
•    Analyze test data and certification requirements to assess environmental performance and product quality in textile systems.
•    Use laboratory testing methods and conformity assessment procedures to support sustainable textile certification.
•    Develop certification strategies for textile products and processes based on regulatory requirements and sustainability goals.
•    Analyze the potential of digital tools, including blockchain and Digital Product Passports, to enhance transparency and traceability in textile certification.

Competences

After the completion of this module, learners will:
•    Demonstrate independent judgement in selecting and applying appropriate certification and testing schemes for sustainable textile products.
•    Manage quality certification and testing activities in collaboration with laboratories, certification bodies, and regulatory authorities.
•    Support organizational decision-making related to sustainable product development, certification, and environmental compliance.
•    Execute collaborative case study analyses addressing sustainability-driven process and product certification challenges in the textile industry.
