General objective
The learner will be introduced to:
- Key concepts and technologies of additive manufacturing in footwear production.
- Materials and their properties for 3D printing and footwear prototyping.
- Digital file preparation and 3D printer operation, including setup and parameter selection.
- The design, prototyping, and evaluation of 3D printed footwear components.

Knowledge
After the completion of this module, learners will:
- Describe the key concepts and processes of additive manufacturing.
- Explain the technologies used in additive manufacturing and their relevance to footwear production.
- Identify and select suitable materials and 3D printing technologies for prototyping footwear components.

After the completion of this module, learners will be able to:
- Prepare digital files for additive manufacturing according to technical specifications.
- Operate basic 3D printing equipment.
- Produce and assess prototypes of footwear components using additive manufacturing methods.

Unit 1: Introduction and Technologies in Additive Manufacturing
- Introduction to additive manufacturing and its role in contemporary footwear design
- Overview of 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA, SLS, etc.)
- Applications of 3D printing in the footwear industry
- Advantages and limitations of additive manufacturing in prototyping and production
Unit 2: Materials and Digital File Preparation
- Types of materials and polymers suitable for footwear prototyping
- Material properties and their impact on functionality and aesthetics
- Preparing digital files according to printer specifications and technical requirements
- File formats and optimisation for accurate 3D printing
Unit 3: 3D Printer Operation, Prototyping and Quality Control
- Setting up and operating 3D printers
- Selecting 3D printing parameters
- Prototyping footwear components using additive manufacturing
- Quality control, safety procedures, and prototype evaluation
