General objective
The learner will be introduced to:
  • Describing the principles and processes involved in creating digital 3D models for fashion footwear components.
  • Explaining the criteria and methods for evaluating digital footwear models according to technical specifications and visual standards.
  • Using digital tools and software to develop, adapt and prototype footwear designs, including digital patterns and templates.
  • Integrating ergonomic, functional and aesthetic considerations into the design and presentation of 3D footwear models.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge
After the completion of this module, learners will:
  • Describe the principles and processes involved in creating digital 3D models of fashion footwear components.
  • Explain the criteria and methods for evaluating digital footwear models against technical specifications.
  • Analyse the role of digital patterns and 3D modelling in developing functional fashion products.
Skills
After the completion of this module, learners will be able to:
  • Create digital 3D models of fashion footwear components using appropriate design software.
  • Develop and adapt digital patterns and templates from 3D models.
  • Evaluate and refine digital footwear models according to technical specifications and visual presentation standards. 
  • Communicate footwear design concepts through visual renderings and digital presentations.

Course Content

Unit 1: Introduction to 3D Modelling and Software Tools
  • Introduction to Digital Footwear Design
  • Software Tools and Interfaces (e.g. Rhino, TinkerCAD or similar)
  • 3D Modelling Techniques: creating and manipulating basic components
  • Digital Pattern and Template Creation
Unit 2: Ergonomics, Aesthetics, and Model Refinement
  • Footwear Ergonomics and Function: principles of comfort, fit, and functionality
  • Aesthetic and Visual Design: colour, proportion, texture, and pattern
  • Model Evaluation: assessment of models against technical specifications and visual standards
Unit 3: Project Work and Presentation
  • Presentation techniques: visual renderings, slides, and digital portfolios
  • Integration of design, ergonomics, and aesthetics in final presentations
  • Project: Design and presentation of mini-collection components of footwear items
