This MOOC introduces Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) through six modules. The course starts with the foundations of sustainable development, ESD, sustainability competencies and action competence. It then moves on to broader perspectives, such as the SDGs, participation, interdisciplinary learning and local–global sustainability challenges.
The following modules focus on practical ways to teach and integrate ESD. Participants explore inquiry-based learning, collaborative inquiry, project-based learning and problem-based learning, as well as ESD in curriculum and assessment. The course also includes examples from different subjects, such as physical education, crafts, food and nutrition systems and digital learning.
Throughout the course, participants complete short reflective and practical tasks. These tasks help them connect the course themes to their own teaching or professional context, share ideas with others and build a learning diary. At the end of the MOOC, participants create a short action plan for applying ESD in practice.
