This practice-oriented course focuses on conflicts and collaboration as a pathway to sustainability by exploring how diverse actors can move from natural resource conflicts towards collaborative approaches. Combining theoretical foundations with a real-world case study, this course provides participants with practical knowledge in multi-party settings, conflict management, and third-party involvement. Participants explore frameworks for understanding and analysing natural resource conflicts and critically reflect on collaborative approaches to resolve/mitigate conflicts. This course includes a field excursion to a mining site in North Karelia. This excursion provides a practical opportunity to deepen theoretical concepts by observing a real-world case study. By the end of the course, participants will be able to e.g.:

a)      evaluate benefits and challenges of collaborative approaches

b)     reflect critically how collaboration works or does not work in different cultural, political and ecological contexts

c)      have a global network of researchers and practitioners working with environmental collaboration and conflicts related to natural resource governance
