This MOOC on Forest bioeconomy is intended to introduce the basics on forestry, wood refining, products and the overall forest industry sector to students with limited background on the topic. The focus is on introducing a wide array of industrial scale operations, materials, manufacturing systems, products and strategies for their uses, and finally the foresight ideas on the sustainable development on forest sector.

  • After the first section (Forestry and forest bioeconomy) the student understands the fundamentals in the operational conditions of forest-based bioeconomy activities in Europe.
  • After the second section (Solid wood products) the student understands sawmilling and properties of the most significant sawn products and their end uses (and limitations)
  • After the third section (Chemical refining and energy) the student understands the applicability of different feedstocks in industrial conversion processes, and the scope of current and future uses of wooden materials
  • After the fourth and final chapter (Foresight to forest bioeconomy) the student understands the key concepts in biorefining innovations, European system for renewing the industries, and some of our currently perspectives on development of this sector
