A Basic Understanding of Blockchain in Business MOOC course welcomes you to join to learn about blockchain technologies that will shape our future especially in sustainable development, banking and data controlling sectors of our societies.
If you have ever taken interest in new technologies, new ways of financing, and seeing how technologies grant control over data for the people, this is a course for you! The course will show you how different kinds of blockchains have a huge potential to reshape our whole business experience. Moreover, the course will grant you the basic knowledge of blockchains, their different applications in business, and help you understand a new way to build the world.

- are able identify the role of blockchain technology in fostering sustainable business practices.
- have gained an overview of cryptocurrencies, token types, and central bank digital currencies, along with their use cases and potential implications for businesses.
About the course
The course is accessible to all individuals at no cost and welcomes everyone interested in blockchains to join regardless of background or prior studies. The student is followed and helped by the courses helpful tip-dog called Block, who is based on AI generated material, and offers students tips, hints, and support during the course. Block has also read and recorded the course material out loud so you can also listen through the course lesson and introduction materials as you please.
The course structure is divided to introductions section and three main modules. The introductions will test your staring level and the modules will teach you the main concepts and ideas of the course. The modules will answer to the questions about what is blockchain, how to implement it in business sustainable, and what are different cryptocurrencies and tokens. The modules consist of lesson and quizzes that require passing to complete the course. At the end of the course there is feedback section and an optional final exam.
Schedule and Completion
You can complete the course at your own pace during the academic year. After completing the module Introduction and familiarities may choose the completion order of the remaining modules freely.
- To pass the course, the student must do all three main modules and pass all eleven quizzes in them.
- The optional final exam will only improve students grade.
The course module will be open until 31st of July, 2027. All assignments must be completed by then.
Scope and Workload
The scope of the course is 2 ECTS credits.
The course is conducted in 100 % independent and remote learning (54 h) in DigiCampus' Moodle environment.
The course consists of three different components:
- Written material, text-to-speech material, and eleven mandatory quizzes in three modules.
- Optional final exam.
- Mandatory feedback.
Assessment
To complete the course you must pass the introduction module and the three main modules. '
Completing the final exam is not necessary to pass the course but not completing it will result in a lower grade.
Course grading is the following:
- Fail.
- Student hasn't completed all or any of the introduction tasks or module quizzes and lectures.
- Minimun passing grade: 1.
- Student has completed all the introduction tasks and module quizzes and gave feedback of the course.
- No passing grade from the final exam.
- Grade: 2.
- Student has completed all the introduction tasks and module quizzes and gave feedback of the course.
- Completes the final exam with less than 40 right answers.
- Grade: 3.
- Student has completed all the introduction tasks and module quizzes and gave feedback of the course.
- 40/80 questions right on the final exam
- Grade: 4.
- Student has completed all the introduction tasks and module quizzes and gave feedback of the course.
- 60/80 questions right on the final exam.
- Grade: 5.
- Student has completed all the introduction tasks and module quizzes and gave feedback of the course.
- 70/80 questions right on the final exam.
Course Registration/Joining
How to join the course
You can join the course with one of these ways:
- Create a free account with DigiCampus and log in.
- Use Google log in to register to the course.
- As a Finnish higher education student, you can use HAKA to log in.
- As a University of Oulu degree student, you should log in with HAKA.
Study attainments and the course certification
Once you have completed the course, you can apply for credits, credits are provided free of charge. This course is worth two credits (2 ECTS).
- If you are not a degree student at the University of Oulu,
- you can register as an open university student after completing the course.
- Details of this process will be provided at the end of the course.
- As a degree student at the University of Oulu,
- you will get credits through Peppi.
- Please enroll in the course in Peppi only after you have completed it in DigiCampus.
Study credits will be recorded in Peppi once a month.
